iOS 13 The best release since the original iPhone

Apple iOS 13: What are the new features?

Apple iOS 13: What are the new features?

We might be going back to the Future.

Apple announced iOS 13 on June 3, 2019 at WWDC 2019.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior VP of software engineering, says iOS 13 is the “next big release for iOS,” offering significant improvements over prior releases.

Best Features

iOS 13 Best New Features
iOS 13 is a feature rich release.

Dark Mode is the long awaited feature we’ve all been waiting for.

Smaller lighter downloads and updates are also very welcome for the bandwidth conscious among the iOS user base.

Better Performance

As with last year’s iOS 12 update, Apple is promising performance improvement even for the old iPhone models. So when it launches later this year be sure to watch for the reviews before installing. But it should be good.

Apple iOS faster unlocks speeds for Face ID by 30%
We are told that Apps will launch faster as well.

Dark mode

The biggest visual update to iOS since the original iPhone iOS 1 and then iOS7 will be iOS 13 bring us a system wide Dark Mode.
It will be a visually interesting look, plus hopefully it will conserve battery life and be easier on the eyes too. You know how Apps have been switching from day mode to night mode around sunset, I wonder what Dark Mode Apps are going to switch in to? 😜

Swipe keyboards

iOS 13 Quick Path Typing
iOS 13 has native support for “Quick Path” swipe typing.

Third-party keyboards on iOS like SwiftKey or Swype have provided letter swipe typing on their keyboards.

Now, Apple introduces the “Quick Path” keyboard so you can Swipe Type Natively in Messages and elsewhere.

External Storage Access

iOS 13 can read files from SD cards and USB Sticks into the Files App.
We wonder if these are special lightning adapter versions of USB Thumb Drives. This is huge for overcoming the limitations of memory on the device.

Apple Maps

iOS 13 Apple Maps
iOS Maps has way more information for more accurate navigation.

Apple maps is overhauled with a new collection of data and also provides a Google like Street View for the first time.

The new maps data will be incrementally release for select cities and states, and will be available to the rest of America by years end. A global rollout is promised by 2020. Check your local job sites for Apple Mapping Jobs.

Sign in with Apple

iOS 13 Sign in with Apple
iOS13 offers Sign in with Apple!

Apple has a new “Sign in with Apple” feature, which it’ll be making available to developers for logging into Apps and services similarto the way we sign in with social media accounts and Gmail Google Accounts. The promise is that you don’t have to reveal your apple id email address which is always a high value target. Use 2 factor authentication folks.

You’ll be able to create new, private email addresses for each App that forwards to your Apple Id email keeping it private.

Photo and video editing tools

iOS 13 Video Editting

There is a brand new editing interface in iOS 13 for photos and videos. Users can adjust brilliance, highlights, shadows, contrast, saturation, white balance, sharpness, and noise reduction on your content. Users will be able to rotate Video on their phones and iPads.

The Photos App is also getting a new UI, which will use machine learning to remove duplicates and weird clutter like screen-shots for easy browsing.

iTunes Music Playback Lyrics

We always wonder what some of our favorite artists are singing.
iTunes Music Player gets time synced Lyrics so that mystery is solved.

There were a lot of other new features announced included iMessage ID images which could your Memoji. Better Car Play Integration. Lots of VR support. Now you can play Mine Craft in your living room or maybe anywhere.

iOS 13 will be available to iPhone devices (from the iPhone 6S and newer). A developer preview will go live today following the keynote, with a public beta releases later this month.

Which iPhone should I buy in 2018?

Apple recently announced it’s new line up of phones.  This ranged from the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, to the iPhone XR.

But the iPhone X, Along with iPhone 7 & 8 and 7 & 8 Plus Series are still available for purchase.

So with all that in mind, which iPhone currently represents the best value?

Well after many price comparisons of all the models and their configurations, We’ve found that for someone who already has an older iPhone and is looking to upgrade.  They should choose the iPhone 8 Plus.  They should choose the 256 GB model as well.

The combination of the faster processor and the improved camera over the 7 series and especially considering the savings off the premium prices of the newest models means that you get a powerful phone that can play all the latest games and run the latest apps with tonnes of storage for photos, video and all your other data.

You don’t have to deal with the notch or Face ID and you can unlock your iPhone with the elegance and speed of the TouchID.  In fact Touch ID is so convenient that you should buy this phone just so that you can enjoy that for the next year or 2.

Apple disappointed us by not keeping TouchID in the later models.  Yeah we were all asking for a bezeless design and they sort of delivered.  We want to be rid of the bulky forehead and chin on our faithful little digital friend. But now the X serious gives us the Alienesque Notch forehead and a bunch of gestures to learn for using our phone with no home button and TouchID.

So the Insanely Great TouchID may be gone from future iPhone models unless they can catch up to their Android rivals and get Touch ID working under Glass as was rumoured to be coming at some point.

FaceID is not that desirable a feature.  It’s definitely has a creepy feel to it.  Plus it’s damn inconvenient if you are all scarfed up for the winter and have to deshade/degoggle, unscarf to unlock your phone.  Think Skiing or Winter commuting out doors.

Plus you alway have to pick up you phone to unlock it. Or lean over your desk to position your head over it to unlock if it is lying their flat.

iPhone 6 Plus

The good news is, you will be helping Apple to unload their iPhone 8 inventory.  In return you’ll get the best value in the line up right now at a savings from when it was first released.

iTunes is broken

iOS has a big problem. iTunes…

iOS has a big problem.

iTunes is broken

iTunes is a poor net citizen because Bandwidth is not free.

It’s a bandwidth hog.

Apple is proud of the Eco- friendly power efficiency of its hardware, but what about the overall energy footprint and the cost of managing iOS data so inefficiently. Gigabytes of downloads wasting Electricity, Time and Network Bandwidth. Multiply that by the 100’s of millions of iOS devices out there and you can see that it is a real problem.

Apple needs to realize that it is doing a disservice to customers who have multiple iOS devices in their home.

Just imagine a home with 2 kids and 2 adults.
Maybe 4 iPhones and 2 iPads.
Just imagine that all have an average of 50 Apps and that each App is refreshed once a year on average. There may also be 2 iOS updates on each device a year weighing in at over 1GB each.

Suppose that the average App. is 250MB in size; that would work out to be about 74 GB of bandwidth bandwidth used just to keep the software up to date for those devices.

262 apps 18.72 GB

My iPhone has 262 apps 18.72 GB. Typical?

These are conservative estimates.

Then imagine that you’ve got a few iMacs or Mac Books or PCs running iTunes.
When they fire up they also want to download the exact same apps wasting even more bandwidth.

Then there is iCloud music streaming, iCloud data syncing and backup.

These devices combined with the way iTunes currently works are using up a lot of network resources. Even eating into data allocation you might have budgeted for other high bandwidth consumers like Netflix.

If your ISP charges you $1.50 / GB or more for bandwidth overages this can really start to add up. Or worse you find out that you reached your download capacity near the start of the month and you are being throttled for the remainder of the month for overall slow and aggravating internet access experience.

Should iTunes on your PC and iTunes on your iOS devices be so inefficient?

Not everyone has ideal internet access. Many rural users are stuck with slow DSL, Satellite or Cellular Network internet access. Bandwidth limits are firm and overage costs are expensive.

One elegant solution would be for Airport Extremes (with USB memory stick) and Airport Time Capsules to implement (WCCP) Web Cache Communication Protocol.

This would cache .ipa and .ipsw files in a cache allocated on the 2 or 3 terabyte drive.

When another device tried to upgrade an app that had already been downloaded and cached, it gets the update from the local network. It does not have to go out to the internet to waste time and money. The user would see a delightfully fast update adding to the pleasure of owning such a well managed device.

Schools and Businesses with iOS devices are starting to see the need for caching iOS applications. Homes could benefit from this solution as well.

There were rumours that this was going to be a capability of the newly released Airport Extremes.

Airport Extreme & Time Capsule needs WCCP

Airport Extreme & Time Capsule needs WCCP

What happened to this capability?

Apple should complete this capability and activate it in the next (or near future) Airport Extreme software update. This would be a really compelling reason to buy an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule over similar and cheaper competitors in the market.  Greater Synergy within Apple Products to delight the owner of iOS devices would be a competitive advantage.

Apple, please, please, please fix this.

iPhone 5s

iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s are here.

On September 10th, 2013 Apple announced the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.

iPhone 5c

iPhone 5c

iPhone 5c

The iPhone 5c comes with a plastic unibody that has the dimensions of the original iPhone 5.
It has the same 4 inch screen with retina display and will come with the iOS 7 mobile operating system installed.

The iPhone 5c comes in 5 colours including yellow, white, blue, green and pink, which should appeal to younger buyers. It will start at $99 on a 2 year contract — the same price point that Apple used to offer for its older phones like the iPhone 4 and 4s.

Walmart is already taking preorders at a $10.00 discount.

iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s in Space Gray, Gold and Silver

iPhone 5s

The iPhone 5s offers an A7 processor rated at 33% faster than the A6 in the iPhone 5 and 5c. There is also a M7 motion coprocessor that should make Athletic and Sleep monitoring apps even better able to detect the motion of the iPhone 5s owners.
It comes in 3 metalic colours.

Space Gray iPhone 5s

Space Gray iPhone 5s with 8MPiSight Camera and dual flash.

Available in silver, gold, and space gray the iPhone 5s also features a Touch ID fingerprint identity sensor, ultrafast LTE wireless, an iSight camera with a larger 8 MP sensor, a 2 tone flash that results in more natural colour in the resulting photographs.

Walmart is already taking preorders at a $20.00 discount.

iPhone 5s

iPhone 5s the King of Smart Phones

The Gold iPhone 5s with 64 GB of memory for $399.00 looks like the premium flag ship model to own.

Is the iPhone 5c priced right for emerging markets like China and India?

Well while all the pundits are saying that the new phone in priced too high, all I can say is, “Have you never heard of discounts?”.
I expect that early adopters and fans of the new phone will happily pay the full price. More Patient Bargain hunters will find the discounts that retailers will eventually provide.

The Apple Execs aren’t fools.  They know that keeping the initial price of the iPhone 5c high will add to its prestige and keep their profit margins high.  Eventually the phone will be discounted through its retailers.

iOS 7 for iPhone 5, 4S, 4, iPod touch 5 owners

iOS 7 announcment

iOS 7 announcment

On June 10th 2013, Apple announced their plans to release new versions of Mac OS X (Mavericks (they’re done with the Big Cats Meme. (They jokingly considered the code name Sea Lion))) for Mac Books and iMacs as well as the new Mac Pro and along with the much anticipated iOS 7.

iOS 7 promises many new features for or iPhone 5, 4S, 4, iPod touch 5 owners.

iOS 7

IOS 7 Available Fall 2013

Jony Ive’s influence is most definitely seen in the new iOS face-lift. Scott Forstall skeuomorphic design (making things on the phone look like real life objects) direction is gone. The look of iOS 7 is modern and fresh.

They lifted some user interface efficiencies from the Jail Break community with addition of Control Center.

iOS 7 Control Center

With Control center you can quickly control your iPhone’s settings. You can quickly switch on a flashlight, WiFi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and toggle rotation lock. Apple TV could be insanely great!

Apple TV is going to be insanely great!

Apple TV could be insanely great!

Apple TV could be insanely great!

Imagine, you can ask Siri to find any show from any network. 500+ Channels.
It’s all there, every show in a search-able database in the iCloud.
Then when she finds it and shows it to you, you tell Siri to record only new episodes and skip the Ads (for reruns).

No scrolling slowly through those arcane slow responding menu systems that the cable providers give you. Program the shows you want to see in seconds hands free or Control it or watch it from your iMac, MacBook Pro/Air, iPad and your iPhone, the last TV remote you may ever need.

The US networks will love it so they can get Hard Data on what people are watching and sell more targeted advertising. It gives them the freedom to show different Ads to different people. People respond better to advertising they prefer rather than shot gunning everyone with the same Ads.

Apple might even provide Television Networks with Ad Servers for custom Ads.
Campaigns could be even more unified across your leisure activities like reading, catching up on news or surfing the web.

Apple replaces every Television station but allows cable companies to sell more Internet service. They bring their Apple Fan Base to the table.

Shopping Channels could be much more profitable if you could shop with your iTunes account, you probably impulse buy a lot more.

Trial Production Of Apple iPhone 5S Already Starting And Earlier Than Expected?

iPhone5S coming in 2013

DigiTimes is reporting from a Chinese-language source Commercial Times report that Apple will begin trial production of the iPhone 5S as early as December 2012.

Perhaps in response to low production rates from Foxcon of the iPhone 5, Apple has seen the need to ramp up the certification processes for parts and components for the new iPhone 5S.

The report also claims that the iPhone 5S could enter volume production in the Q1, 2013. So, the iPhone 5S may appear mid year 2013 or around October 2013

Apple first launched the iPhone in the summer of 2007 and then stayed on an annual summer time update cycle. This schedule held until the launch of the iPhone 4S which occurred in October 2011. Apple adopted a fall-release schedule with the iPhone 5 in 2012. As a result, many have expected the iPhone 5’s successor to launch in the fall of 2013.

Apple needs to have frequent and incremental releases for the phone to fend off competition such as Samsung and Microsoft.

Competition in the SmartPhone arena makes for more consumer choice.

Expect to hear more detailed reports in the near future that can validate this early report. It seems that manufacturers are not incentivised to keep Apple’s secrets. So other component makers will continue the leaks trend.

iPhone 5

iPhone 5 available for order midnight September 14th

iPhone 5

The new iPhone 5

The main reason to get the new iPhone is the new four-inch screen. The next reason to get it is the faster processor called A6. The A6 processor promises faster CPU and faster graphics. So everything will be more responsive. The new iPhone 5 is also thinner 7.6 mm thick. It’s also lighter weighing in at 112 g compared to the iPhone 4S 140 g.

The gorilla glass on the back of the phone is now gone replaced with an aluminum case. The metal case is also anodized and the black model actually looks better than the white this time. The Machining processes are also more precise. Phil Schiller referred to it as the most beautiful iPhone they’ve ever created.

The prices are 16 GB $199 32 GB for $299 and 64 GB for $399 carrier subsidized pricing. Off contract is $699 for the 64 GB.

The camera is also improved. New software has been added to allow you to take panoramic photographs catching up to Android phones. The lens cover on the camera is crystal sapphire for clarity and hardness. It should also be more scratch resistant.

So as a result of the above features you can expect better web browsing, better game graphics, more productivity and better photographs, from this new phone. Thanks to all the leaks in the supply chain, they really weren’t that many surprises for this product announcement. So if you were paying attention to websites like, you knew just about everything that would be announced September 12th, 2012.

The other additional things to notice on the new iPhone is that the 30 pin connector has been replaced by a new 9 inch reversible connector call lightning. Adapters for 30 pin connectors are available to interface with the new nine pin lightening slot. There are also 3 microphones built into the phone; front facing, back facing and one at the bottom for better directional sound recording and better noise cancellation. This should help Siri to work better and improve hands free phone calling.

The headphones microphone jack is also moved to the bottom. iPhone 5 comes with the new native iOS 6 operating system and it also includes many upgrades for Siri The new Siri features include more knowledge about restaurants, also movies and sports statistics iOS 6 also removes the Google maps and YouTube application.

Google has already provided new separate versions of these application for download in the App. Store.

The Apple version of the maps application also offers turn by turn navigation a database of 100 million points of interest (businesses, gas stations, etc).

The new iPhone 5 also includes LTE capable cellular radio processors which also supports many other cellular technologies such as 3G, Edge, HSPA, HSPA+ and others. So mobile data transfer is lightning fast. Wireless data transfers are also close to 100 MB/sec due to 2.5 and 5.0 MHz capable antennae.
