So if you were going to buy a new iPhone not having been with Rogers or Bell, who should you choose?

Right now in the United States they only have the choice of AT & T. Unless the iPhone is Jail Broken.

But in Canada you can get an iPhone from Rogers, Fido, Bell and Telus. its great for Canadians to have choice but who should you choose?

Well do you care about voice calling more than you do about data?

Rogers has better voice quality. Bell has a faster Data Network.

You can select any 2 iPhones. 1 Rogers and 1 Bell and do the speedtest.net App test. Bell gets a faster result.

Select any 2 iPhones and have a conversation with either Carrier and Rogers sounds more clear. Bell has digital hiss and echo and pings.

The other point of note is that for out of plan minutes for local calling you have to pay $0.40 per minute with Bell but $0.35 with Rogers.

Telus and Fido are lower cost variants of Bell and Rogers respectively. Its arguable that they are the best deal since they leverage their big brothers networks.

HSPA Bell Coverage as shown by this really biased chart

The average cost of an iPhone contract with Rogers or Bell is $60.00 to $75.00 per month.

This includes, unlimited Texting, 6 GB of Data and between 150 to 250 minutes with Evenings and Weekends for free starting at 6:00 PM. Be sure to let me know if you have a better plan than that.

I’m curious to learn what your experience is so please post a comment below.

Telus is the first Canadian wireless carrier to reduce the 8GB iPhone 3GS to $49.00 on a 3-year voice and data plan contract.

The iPhone 4 roll out is in full motion with line ups 80 to 100 deep at the Apple Stores in the GTA every day since its release in Canada on July 30th.
So 16GB and 32GB iPhone 3GS are disappearing from sales floors, the 8GB iPhone 3GS comes in at the lowest price ever for a brand-new iPhone.

If you are looking for a deal and do not care much for the iPhone 4, then check out the iPhone 3GS from Telus:

iPhone 3GS 8GB Black (on contract): $49.00 (was $99.00; $50 price drop)

iPhone 3GS 8GB Black (without contract): $549.00 (locked to Telus)

All new iPhone 3GS units already have iOS 4.0 or 4.0.1 preloaded.

iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1 introduced multitasking and home and lock screen backgrounds which run slowly on a 3G iPhone.
The iPhone 3Gs is perfectly suited for the new iOS. 8 Gigabytes of data does not leave a lot of room to play though if you will be a heavy Apps and iPod user.

Users who purchase the 8GB iPhone 3GS outright (no contract) at $549 from an Apple Store will have the device unlocked. Users who purchase the 8GB iPhone 3GS on contract for $49 from an Apple Store will have the device locked to Telus (just as if you bought the device at Telus for $49).

Customers purchasing at an Apple Store also receive a Telus SIM card in store when buying on contract, or will get to choose any carrier SIM card if purchased outright.
